Week 294

A CITY SUNDAY MORNING

This week we take a peek at parts of Melbourne that I see on my way to and from work every day.

1. This turret belongs to an old building on the corner of Spencer and Flinders Streets. The building
now houses a backpackers' hostel. Behind it is one of the new buildings on Flinders Street.

2. Apartment blocks tower over the Melbourne Exhibition Centre on the southern bank of the Yarra River.

3. An unusual sight on the river... these two were angling from their boat just downstream of the Spencer St bridge.

4. The grand old dame Polly Woodside is still moored on the river; the new convention centre forms
the backdrop.

5. Looking south down Clarendon Street from the tram stop at the Crown Casino complex.
Spencer Street becomes Clarendon Street from the river southwards and runs all the way
to Albert Park.

6. The covered walkway protecting pedestrians from the overhead construction work on a new apartment
block on Clarendon.

.

7.  Clarendon Street, eastern side, with a coffee shop, a Japanese restaurant and a sex
shop in one block.

8. Coventry Street, which runs at right angles to Clarendon, and the gallery where I work (the maroon facade).

9. The railing on the road bridge across the railway lines just south of Southern Cross station on Spencer Street.

10. A giant eagle broods over the open area south of Southern Cross.
