Week 327

SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL - BARRA FUNDA

The images this week were taken in the Barra Funda district of São Paulo, and feature two places:
the Memorial da Americá Latina and the Parque Água Branca. The memorial is a large complex
designed by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The Parque Água Branca dates from
1929 and was the creation of the then minister of agriculture, Dr Fernando Costa and today still
houses a  number of government departments of the state of
São Paulo.

1. The auditorium of the Memorial da Americá Latina.

2. Figures in a concrete landscape - the central plaza of the memorial complex is typical of Niemeyer's love for large expanses of
concrete, fine on a cool day like when we were there, but hellish when the sun bakes down!

3. The Salão de Atos (conference hall) of the memorial complex.

4. A full view of the Salão de Atos, with Niemeyer's statue "The Hand".

5. The library building, with beyond it the adjacent building of the Universidade Nove de Julho, one of the city's universities.

6. Looking through an arch across the footbridge across the Avenida Auro Suares de Moura Andrade at the university building.

7. In the Parque Água Branca... one of the lovely buildings, and in the foreground a bust of Dr Fernando Costa.

8. A palm-lined pathway in the park.

9. Yes, it's me and roots again!

 10. A pond in the park.
